Walking in the Sierra Nevada, Andy Walmsley -
The Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range in Spain,
provides tremendous scope for the adventurous mountain traveller: there
are rugged peaks over 3000m (Alta Montana), remote valleys, crystal-clear
streams and some very interesting scenery among the lower limestone peaks
of Baja Montana. Mountain bikers will find plenty of routes to explore; in
winter there are snow sports galore, from dowhill skiing and snowboarding
to nordic ski tours, and winter mountaineering. With the tourist excesses
of the Alps thankfully still absent here, the Sierra Nevada can provide
the kind of experience which is now becoming rare in many of the world's
other mountain areas. This guide covers the high sector of the range and
will prove invaluable to any visitor to the area. There is information on
camping and accommodation, road access, mountain-biking routes, local
bases, topography and climate, as well as descriptions of 50 walking
routes that vary in length from 3km to 56km. Published Feb 06

(1175km) and leads north and northwest along paths and old tracks through Extremadura, Castillle and Galicia. The route is suitable for mountain bikes. It is the only original guide to this route in English, and complements the two new Cicerone guides covering the Way of St James from Le Puy to Santiago by the same author. As well as giving directions for walking the route, with notes for cyclists, the book also provides information on places to
visit along the way, the history of the pilgrimage and the availability of practical facilities such as shops, bars, restaurants and accommodation. Published Sept 05. Limited availability.

North from Granada: A Walking Tour from Granada to Toledo and Madrid in a
Direct Line, Roy Nash - A very enjoyable
read. This is NOT a serious book about walking in Spain, but a really
humorous, and sometimes quite touching, account of the adventures of 2
very different middle-aged men who just decided to walk together from
Granada to Madrid. Whether or not you know Spain, or even like walking, I
think you're with them every step of the way, and by the end your feet
ache too! You feel their frustration as they get into one scrape after
another, as they argue and sulk, but are determined to keep going. And at
the end you really share their pride when they eventually achieve their
goal. Apart from being hugely entertaining, the book is visually
attractive, with lots of photographs to aid the reader's imagination, and
some amusing vignettes. It would make an ideal gift. Buyer Review.
