Do summit different - Conquer a Corbett

Volunteers needed to climb 219 mountains for people affected by cancer

Adventurers are being challenged to climb more than 200 mountains to raise cash for people affected by cancer.  Macmillan Cancer Support in Scotland want people to sign up to take part in its Conquer a Corbett challenge, which raised over £40,000 for the charity in 2007. Last year fundraisers climbed 129 of the Corbetts for Macmillan, but this year the charity want to have someone climb every single one of the country's 219 Corbetts - the name of all Scotland's hills and mountains between 2500ft and 2999ft high.

Conquer a Corbett runs throughout May. Anyone with a moderate level of fitness can take part, as along with some very challenging mountains

suitable for seasoned mountain-climbers, there are easier hills that are suitable for those who have never climbed before. All those who take part can choose which Corbett to climb, and choose when to do it as long as it's in May.  Participants can climb more than one Corbett, and challenges can be completed in teams. In fact Macmillan recommends that inexperienced climbers don't take on the challenge alone.

Cotswold Way Challenge     4 - 8 June 2008

Enjoy 102 miles of beautiful English countryside and raise vital funds towards Julian House’s work with homeless men and women.

If you enjoy walking and want a new challenge, or, if you have always wanted to walk the Cotswold Way then this event is for you. Set in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this route takes in panoramic views of the Severn Vale, pretty Cotswold stone villages, open pastures and quiet valleys.

Starting at the picturesque Chipping Camden you will spend the next 5 days walking the Cotswold Way, through quintessentially English countryside to the Roman city of Bath. Walking on average 20 miles a day, the route takes in beautiful scenery around Broadway, Winchcombe, Cleeve Hill, Painswick, Birdlip, North Nibley and the Sodbury’s before offering magnificent views over the World Heritage city of Bath

The challenge will be limited to 14 places and although we will arrange your transport, accommodation and packed lunches – the rest is up to you! The overall route is well marked but we recommend that you purchase the relevant Ordnance Survey Maps so that you can confidently navigate your own way between each stage. We will transfer your luggage, allowing you to walk at your own pace.

Julian House is keen to ensure that the event will generate the maximum amount of support for its work with the homeless. Participants will pay an initial registration fee (£180) which covers all the main costs, including their accommodation. They will then be asked to raise the sponsorship target of £350 – all of which will go towards Julian House’s various projects.

Full event details can be found on our website www.julianhouse.org.uk or call Cathy Adcock on 01225 354656

Circuit of Bath Walk

Homeless charity Julian House will be staging their seventh Circuit of Bath Walk on
Sunday 28 September.  The 20 mile circular route takes in some fantastic countryside on the edge of the city.  Participants can do anywhere between 2 and 20 miles; thanks to the unique shuttle bus service that operates between start points throughout the day.

The route comprises public rights of way through Monkton Combe, Englishcombe, Newton St Loe, Upper Swainswick and Bathampton.  Solsbury Hill, the Midford Valley and Woolley are just a few of the scenic highlights.

Not only is this a great day out but participants will also be giving a welcome boost to the charity’s work. Although Julian House is best known for its busy Night Shelter, this is only one of services it provides for homeless men and women. Recognising that homelessness is not a single issue Julian House has developed new projects and facilities which aim to tackle the underlying problems which force men and women onto the streets.

Participants can start at any of the five check points, where detailed route instructions are supplied.  Further information is available on the Julian House website – www.julianhouse.org.uk or by calling Cathy Adcock on 01225 354656. email cathya@julianhouse.org.uk
