The Ridgeway National Trail Guides, Anthony Burton - The Ridgeway follows one of the oldest 'green roads' in Europe. It runs for 87 miles (140 km) from Overton Hill in the west, across the Marlborough Downs and the Vale of the White Horse, to Ivinghoe Beacon on the northern edge of the Chilterns. This is the complete, official guide for the long-distance walker or the weekend stroller. All you need is this one book. Published March 08.

The routes take the walker through the varied and beautiful countryside of the Chilterns and include walks along the delightful Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal. All the inns are in the Chilterns and have been chosen for their good food and ambience. Published April 09

Beyond here it takes a surprisingly quiet route into London. The footpath tries to stay as close as possible to the route the ‘Bard’ may have taken on his own journeys between Stratford-upon-Avon and London. Published February 06.
|
The Chiltern Way, Nicholas Moon - This book is an excellent and comprehensive description of the Chiltern Way, a 133 mile circular walk through the Chiltern Hills. Nick Moon is an experienced walker and author and he leaves no stone unturned in providing all the information required for the long-distance walker. The route descriptions are accurate and detailed, matched by clear maps showing the route and nearby geographic features. Each section lists the OS maps covering that section, should further detail be required, along with interesting historical notes for towns and villages. There is also a table of distances and heights for each significant place on the route - averaging nearly one every mile - and an overall map showing the Chiltern Way in relation to other long-distance paths in the region. Buyer Review. Published October 00. |
The Grand Union Canal Walk,
Clive Holmes - The Grand Union Canal

country.

views of the Marlborough Downs. The introduction gives information about the
topography, geology and history of the area, and describes the flora and
fauna inhabiting it. The main section of the book comprises 30 walks,
suitable for all abilities, from young children to experienced walkers. Each
walk has a key illustrating principal features, such as level of difficulty
and type of terrain, a route profile indicating altitude and distances, as
well as a fact file summarizing useful information, such as start and finish
points, duration, safety advice and points of interest. It is illustrated
