| Walking in Derbyshire, Elaine Burkinshaw - Numerous walking books have been written about the Peak District, home of Britain's first and most visited national park, which covers roughly half of Derbyshire. This guide has a broader scope. It offers comprehensive coverage of whole of the county of Derbyshire, including the Peak District but also the less-visited and contrasting, gentler landscapes south of Ashbourne and Derby. The 60 day walks described in detail here are set against the backdrop of the varied and beautiful Derbyshire landscape and cover an extensive range of historical themes. Routes pass remnants of ancient civilizations, fine market towns and villages, caverns and mines, castles, grand country houses and parklands, Georgian and Victorian spa resorts and industrial heritage sites and the book is full of all the background information walkers need to appreciate the local history. Walks range between 2 and 10 miles long, over a wide variety of terrain, offering something for walkers of all abilities and all this lies in the heart of England, with excellent accessibility from all parts of Britain. Published June 10. |
The Duffield Skyline and Other Walks in Derbyshire, Lionel Bailey - The picturesque and charming village of Duffield and the surrounding areas of beauty in Derbyshire have fantastic walking routes for both the experienced hiker and the more casual walker. Each section contains clear and precise walk data which identifies the start point and how to get there, and gives information on local conveniences and refreshments, height gain and a summary of the route. Every route features a map showing the direction to walk and key features along the route. Route details give comprehensive directions and facts on various landmarks passed by. This detailed and informative walking guide contains 20 circular routes, from 4-1/2 miles to 20 miles in length, with each route consisting of four components. Many of the routes are based on original charity walks. Dr James Mason of Duffield organised an annual sponsored walk to support the homeless people of Derby, known as the Duffield Deanery walk, which visited the churches in the Deanery. This explains why churches feature significantly as stopping points or points of reference. The routes have been planned to minimize road walking, mainly crossing fields and tracks. They will take you past some interesting sights including churches, farms, World Heritage sites, pubs and mills. Varied and challenging - if you choose - this guide is a must for walking enthusiasts, whether local or visitors to Derbyshire. Published March 10. |
The Derbyshire Portway, Pilgrimage to the Past, A Walking Guide,
Stephen Bailey - Stephen Bailey's fascinating guide to the Portway - an
ancient prehistoric trackway in Derbyshire - has two aims, both of which
are successfully achieved. 'The Derbyshire Portway' sets out to be both a
pocket guide to this ancient route, substantial parts of which can still
be followed on the ground; and to introduce the reader to its history. As
a walking guide it is concise and accurate, and augmented by
simple-to-follow sketch maps. In addition, each stretch of the walk
is given its own brief chapter identifying points of historical interest,
and constantly tempting the walker to stray from the straight and narrow
in order to investigate Iron Age hill forts, Mediaeval churches, Roman
remains and many other objects of interest calculated to delay one's
journey. Published February 08.
