AA 50 Walks in the Peak District - Walking is one of Britain's favourite leisure activities, and with "50 Walks in The Peak District" you can find a variety of mapped walks to suit all abilities - from the casual walker to the experienced hiker. The book features all the practical detail you need, accompanied by fascinating background reading on the history and wildlife of the area, as well as other local points of interest. Peak District - Dark Peak Walks, Dennis Kelsall - Many of the routes are focussed upon reservoirs, valleys and the edges of the moors, where there are obvious landmarks to guide the way. Elsewhere, the vast, featureless spaces may appear intimidating to the inexperienced, but most of the described walks follow discernible paths, which, in fine weather, should present no great difficulty to the sensible novice. But, be aware that conditions on the tops can be markedly different from those in the valleys and can very rapidly deteriorate. Adequate clothing and provisions and the ability to navigate using map and compass are necessary. It is easy to become disoriented in mist and, in this empty terrain, a GPS receiver can be a useful additional tool to pinpoint your position. The longer moorland walks do present a challenge and newcomers to rambling would be advised to develop their experience on the less demanding routes first. In most places, well-behaved dogs are welcome and ought to be kept on leads near livestock, in farmyard areas and while passing through nature reserves. They should also be restrained during the spring nesting season upon the moor and note also that, in some open access areas, dogs are not permitted other than on Rights of Way. Welcoming country pubs and village cafes appear on or near many of the walks, but if you intend relying on them for something to eat, it is as well to check in advance that they will be open when you pass. Having said all that, all that remains is for you to choose your walk and set off. Published November 09. |
AA 30 Walks in the Peak District - This original concept takes thirty
of the most popular walks in the Peak District from the AA's best-selling
and newly updated walks database and packages them on individual laminated
cards in an easy-to-carry, durable box. Each of the cards are pocket sized
to carry with you on your walk and are durable and weather proof to
protect them from the elements. Each of the walks are carefully selected
to suit all levels of fitness and ability and clear route directions and
maps make them easy-to-follow. The small and handy size means that the box
can be stowed away in a pocket or handbag and single cards extracted at
each walk start point. Published October 09.

Peak District Pub Walks, Bob Steel - This is a pocket-sized, travellers guide to some of the best walking and best pubs in the Peak District. It also explores some of the region's fascinating industrial heritage and has useful information about local transport and accommodation. There are many walking guides to the Peak District available and some which include information about pubs. None, however, contain such an extensive selection of quality, real-ale pubs as Peak District Pub Walks and none carry the authority of CAMRA. Published April 08

Short Walks Peak District, Kevin Berman - Those unfamiliar
to the Peak District might assume it is a region of pointed mountains. In
fact, the highest land is found on the almost flat plateaux in the north.
The name probably comes from the Old English 'peac', meaning hill. The
'Dark Peak' in the northern Peak District is a terrain of gritstone
bedrock, high, open moorland, distinctive crags or 'edges', and resistant
rocky tors eroded into remarkable shapes in places. In contrast, the White
Peak of the southern Peak District is characterised by greyish white
limestone, attractive river valleys such as the Lathkill and the Dove,
underground caverns and drystone walls. Published November 08. New Edition July 10 (see page 2 for description)

Day Walks in the Peak District, Norman Taylor and Barry Pope - The third title in Vertebrate Publishing's series of compact and portable hillwalking guidebooks, and the second volume of Peak District day walks. This book showcases 20 new circular routes in the Peak District, between 8 and 13 miles (14km and 21km) in length, suitable for hillwalkers of all abilities. The routes are split into three areas: The High Moors, including the Kinder plateau and Bleaklow; Hills, Tors and Edges, including walks around the Eastern Edges such as Stanage and Burbage; and Limestone Country, with walks in the beautiful limestone dales and valleys of the Peak. The routes have been compiled by Peak District hillwalkers Norman Taylor and Barry Pope. They have used their intimate knowledge of the Peak District when compiling these routes. Who better to write a guide than authors who have walked these hills for many years? Each route in this guide is described with easy-to-follow directions and details of distance, navigation information, refreshment stops and is plotted on clear and easy to use Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 mapping.
